2 Types of Thermal Bar code Label Printers

A method of identification that utilizes an electronic system is called a bar code. There has been an increased demand for this technology in recent years. Specific identifying information is downloaded with bar code software and then printed onto labels. The bar code printers are sometimes difficult to find and normally have to be purchased from retailers or online distributors. Bar code printers come in a variety of styles. Some are hand held and allow the worker to be mobile within their environment. Others are made for desktop use and remain stationary. Ink jet and laser jet printers are limited to a few symbols, not necessarily equipped for most jobs. Modules can be added to upgrade the system at a higher cost. Most bar code printers come in several different price ranges according to the information needed.

Work that requires multiple symbols may require the use of a thermal bar code printer. There are two types currently in use: direct thermal printing and thermal transfer. The direct thermal printer places the symbols directly onto the label, while the thermal transfer utilizes a ribbon and print head. Thermal transfer may be at a disadvantage since it requires constant changing of ribbons. Symbol and Zebra are among the most popular name brands when considering a thermal bar code printer.

When the work requires both kinds of thermal printers, a larger unit can be purchased to accommodate this need. Time and money is saved by large companies when accessing this system. The direct thermal printer is often limited in its usage and primarily for smaller jobs, but the thermal transfer printer can produce a large quantity of labels.

The thermal transfer printer is the most sought after due to its unlimited printing capabilities and primarily utilized for commercial printing jobs. Specific paper and replacement ribbons will need to be purchased to accompany the system. Also, companies will need to consider the size of the printer for the space it will occupy. Prior to making a purchase, consider all the aspects.

Manufacturers of the thermal printers have taken steps to prevent duplication of bar codes. Security features are installed within the printers to insure the information cannot be copied. The Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) protects the system and eliminates reproduction of symbols.

The speed of data processing in the device will be determined by the software application utilized in the bar code scanner, which will also affect its precision and effectiveness. And because of this, a number of users realize that their scanner is functioning at a much slower speed.
