Canon Pixma MP620 Review

The Canon Pixma MP620 colour inkjet multifunction printer offers lots of storage space and connectivity options.

Even though its not that aesthetically appealing, the Canon Pixma MP620 could perfectly suit in on any busy home or office environment.

A handful of advanced features mark out the silvery Canon Pixma MP620. The control panel features a number of buttons and a scroll wheel that allows you to navigate through the tiltable 2.5 inch colour LCD beside it. The remainder of the buttons are clearly marked and simple to use.

Standard connectivity features include a built-in WiFi, ethernet and USB, with an option to add an adaptor to enable Bluetooth. The Canon Pixma MP620 provides 2 media slots that will work with the majority of cards, although you will need to obtain a third-party adaptor to utilize the XD Picture Card format. The PictBridge port accepts only Canon-compatible devices.

The Canon Pixma MP620 has two 150-sheet input paper trays, one at the front for letter-size plain paper and the other one at the rear for large and thick media. Upon initiating the print job, the 150-sheet output tray automatically unfolds itself from the front panel just above the input tray.

Often times though, on our test unit, it required a rediculous amount of effort to raise the telescoping guides necessary for the rear vertical input, and we inadvertently collapsed them several times. One other setback of the Canon Pixma MP620 is the absence of an automatic document feeder (ADF) and duplexing capabilities.

Test results for the MP620 were encouraging. It printed an avarage of 7.6 pages a minute with plain text while graphics took an avarage of 2.2ppm. Black text was clear and dark when using the pigment black ink cartridge.

A dye based second black, cyan, magenta, and yellow is used for printing colour graphics. However, there's a bit of too much yellow in some of the colour graphics, particularly on flesh tones, appeared orangey on plain paper and a bit jaundiced on Canon's photo paper. Despite that and a moderate graininess, images otherwise seem to be vibrant and natural. Results of the scan and copy tests looks good also.

The Canon Pixma MP620 ink cartridges, two blacks, one pigmented (PGI-520BK) and a dye based cartridge (CLI-521BK) plus three colours makes a total of five inks.

This is the first time we have encountered a problem with Canon's normally solid documentation: the printed Setup Guide comes with a confounding flowchart about different installation options that was confusing and difficult to understand. In addition to that, Canon's better-than-average score in our Reliability and Service survey bodes very well for your overall experience.

The Canon Pixma MP620 offers an array of features inside a well-designed package. Its connectivity in addition to good paper handling makes it ideal for students or a small home office.
