How to select a color laser printer in a changing economy
You might have figured out that the busiest time of the year for shopping is in November and December. There is enough to do at the office and on the horizon is one of the biggest shopping days of the year on the day after Thanksgiving.
Are you in the market for a color laser printer? Did you remember to do your research? This can be a daunting task when faced with so many other priorities during this time of year.
Here are some quick tips to help you understand what you need to research.
One of the biggest things to decide in your selection is if you want a multifunction printer, scanner, copier or if you just want a desktop color laser printer. I have a small office and opted for the multifunction printer. One of the things I wanted was to make sure I selected a very efficient printer that conserved on paper and energy when not in use.
Once you decide on the purpose of the printer you would like, you can then find start listing what features and specifications you would like. How much printing will you be doing per month? Do you want a high speed color and black printing? Do you need high capacity paper holder? Would you like to print on both sides of the paper?
The higher the print speed the more efficient you will be when printing large documents. You will not have to constantly wait while printing. This is especially nice if you are in a hurry.
Print resoltion should be considered carefully when buying. this is something you are stuck with so make sure you get a very good resolution.
Print resolutions vary but on average are 2400 x 600 dots per inch(dpi). You should rate a printer better if there is a high resolution.
Duplex printing is a must in the office. Duplex printing means that you can print on the front and back of the paper. This is especially nice because you conserve on paper. Nobody likes to refill the printer over and over when printing a lot of documents.
This will save you time on maintenance of the paper and will ultimately saves on trees as well.
Paper capacities vary as some have more than one paper tray, but you want a paper tray with at least 100 sheets or better. Opt for 250 sheet tray if possible.
A Multipurpose tray is a nice to have, but I never found a need to have this feature. If you are printing legal documents, then a multipurpose tray is a necessity.
Memory is important if you are printing large color documents. The standard size is 128MB of memory, but the bigger the better. You want the the printer to print as fast as possible and the more memory the better!
Determine how much printing you will be doing per month. Are you printing 100 pages per month, 250 or 500? This will help you narrow your choices on pages per minute, paper tray capacity and toner cartridges needed.
In this changing economy, there are a number of things to consider in your printer selection. Energy star compliant printers will help you save on energy. Sleep mode is especially nice and will conserve energy.
Duplex printing will save on paper consumption.
