Even with such extensive customization options, the Dell Laser Printer 5100cn really shines as a core unit designed for incredible output capacity and speed. The first option pack comes complete with an Ethernet cable for networking, and a 500 sheet additional paper tray to supplement the already included 500 sheet tray. When combined with the 150 sheet multi purpose paper tray, the first pack takes the Dell Laser Printer 5100cn up to 1150 total maximum sheets in storage.

The second optional expansion pack also includes the cable, but upgrades to a 1000 sheet additional tray which brings the unit’s grand storage total to a staggering 1650 sheets. Also, option two includes a huge 20 GB hard drive for local print spooling and print queue processing for when multiple projects are coming in all at once over a network. The local storage maintains the data and then produces it in the order it came in with virtually no in between time.

The set includes all four colors (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow) which come in high yields of 9000 total pages for black, and an 8000 total page yield for each of the colors. The final upgradable option is the Dell Laser Printer 5100cn’s built in 128 MBs of standard memory which can be increased up to 640 MBs via additional RAM.

With a first page out time of only 10.5 seconds for monochrome printing, and color not far behind with only 12.5 seconds, initial starts ups are no problem, though these times are adjusted for standby mode and a standard tray, from complete power off or the multifunction tray delays will be longer. Luckily, when the local storage expansion is implemented, back to back print projects will have the unique feature of zero in between page out time.
