Best version yet!
I'm a long time XP hold out because I had a lot of older games I didn't think would run on this. I've tried the beta RC version and the home premium but this is the best to date. I've seen a lot of bad reviews but most are due to hardware issues. Do yourself a favor and do a little research before you buy and read the licensing agreement if you decide to buy the OEM version.I installed the 64 bit version on this machine with no problems.I did have to download a graphics driver but no biggie.

My computer recently got corrupted and crashed hard. I was running XP Professional, and rather than wipe the drive and reload the XP software, I elected to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro. 7 has a lot of cool new features, and I like it. It will get even better as I get used to it. When I reattached my peripherals, the 7 automatically searched for and reloaded the new drivers; I didn't have to reinstall the drivers for each printer. One word of caution: it doesn't play nice with the older versions of Windows if you want to send an attachment. It has to be in a pdf format or it won't open for the recipient. I understand there is a patch that addresses that problem, but I haven't taken the time to find it at the moment. Overall, I'm glad I bought it.

I prefer professional series on my windows. This version does great and can handle all aspects of computer programming and processing I do. I handle networking, web design and would definitly get it. It is very stable.

FINALLY, Microsoft put out some good code but too expensive
I was a long time Windows XP user and have been using computers since DOS. I got pretty used to XP and definitely didn't want to touch Vista with all of its DRM and restrictions. I tried Apple Snow Leopard and it was OK but an operating system is just an operating system, (Quicken and Office look the same under Apple Leopard as it does under XP or Windows 7). It is really the robustness and usability of the operating system that I like. If you started out on Apple and have Apple apps and are used to it, I think it is a great system. Unfortunately, all of my apps are Windows based and I got tired of Bootcamp, Parallels, and VMWare. Anyway, I figured I'd give Windows 7 a shot. I decided to go with the 64 bit version on my custom built gaming system so I could access RAM above 4GB as well as replace a 10 year old XP operating system.
I like the Windows 7 interface but it takes a little getting used to. The whole operating system feels polished and is extensively debugged. I don't think Microsoft could handle another Vista failure. The operating system itself is pretty bug free and hasn't crashed on me yet. It has handled all that I can throw at it so far. Windows 7 seems to like to communicate over the network with other Windows 7 computers more than it likes to talk to other XP machines. I still managed to get my mixed network (XP and 7) running but it took a little tweaking (different network protocols).
I did a clean installation over the top of an XP Pro installation. Everything went flawlessly and I had no issues at all. One cool thing that happened was Windows 7 saw the XP Pro operating system, made a windows.old directory for it, and left all of my folders untouched. Thanks for that!! that saved me from having to transfer back all of my folders from my backups. Out of all of my XP applications, only one didn't run under Windows 7 or its compatibility modes. Thankfully, Microsoft gives you a complete Virtual XP that runs inside of Windows 7. I started up the virtual XP window, installed my app into XP and I am back in business, that is a cool feature!
Why only 4 stars?? It's overpriced... My recommendation after 30 years of computing.... If you have a stable XP system, stick with it. When it is time to replace your system, chances are you'll probably get Windows 7 included with your new system anyways.
