There are two main types of printers available these days, which are the Laser and inkjet. However, these two types of printers also have subcategories in each type. Each type of  utilizes a different type of cartridge to enable them to print documents. There is also a relatively new type of ink printer known as a solid ink printer. These printers utilize a specially developed solid form of ink which is then melted onto the paper. Solid ink printers don't use cartridges as they use ink that comes in the form of solid sticks and they are placed directly in the printer.
