This thermally sensitive paper is actually chemically treated which darkens as it passes under the heated print head. The advantage of using a portable thermal printer that utilize thermal transfer printing is that they are cheaper to use and operate compared to other printers like inkjet printers, laser printers, and even thermal transfer printers.

The text and images that are printed using thermal printers can fade over a period. Alternatively, the image can become darkened if it is subjected to a lot of heat or light. In either case, the text or image becomes unreadable. Therefore, portable thermal printers are usually used for applications where the life of the printout is not long.
