Thermal Transfer Ribbons - A Brief Introduction
Have you ever wondered how a printer at your favorite retail store is able to print our your receipt on a strip of paper in a jiffy? Many of these printers use thermal transfer technology for printing. Inside the printer is a heated print head that heats up a thin-coated polyester film coated with ‘ink’ that is transferred to a strip of paper. The print head is capable of printing with high resolution at a large number of dots per inch, so that is the reason you can read your printout easily. Thermal transfer Ribbons have been around for some time now. They form the basis of thermal transfer printers, which have found use in a number of industries other than POS and retail due to their ease of use.
Thermal transfer ribbons are also used in label and barcode printers. These printers print out the labels and barcodes that find their way on the products in the retail stores. Many manufacturers also use these to manage their large inventories. The process by which the thermal transfer occurs is simple to understand. The printer head melts the resin and wax compound that forms the ink of the ribbon, which is then transferred to the paper so that you can see the printout. The same type of technology is also used in many fax machines that use plain paper rolls for printing faxes. These fax machines also use thermal transfer ribbons that are made to release ink onto the paper as they are heated up by the print head.
Thermal transfer printers that use these ribbons generally do not need special thermal paper for printing. These normally use plain paper rolls, which are a definite savings advantage over printers that use thermal paper for printing. Thermal transfer ribbons use either wax, a mixture of wax and resin, or pure resin for printing. Wax printing is usually not durable and do not last long. Further, printouts are susceptible to smudging and wear out. Wax and resin thermal transfer ribbons are the standard variety sold in the market. These ribbons last longer and yield printouts that are more durable. Resin is used to print images and barcodes on plastic. Ribbons using resin are therefore used for special purpose printing only.
Thermal transfer ribbons are therefore most widely used in the retail industry and are usually designed to go with POS systems. Therefore, the next time you go to your favorite store, or see a fax printout, your curiosity about how the machine is able to print will be satisfied.
