A Tough Economy Requires Greater Transparency in Leadership
These days most employees are worried about their job. Employees can get distracted wondering how they can recognize if a layoff is impending, if they should start thinking about job alternatives, and other anxious fretting about the future. Employees need reassurance to remain engaged and focused on the job. Leaders need to become more transparent and help their employees cope with uncertainty.
Leadership transparency is a vital tool in people management. It builds trust and gives employees the confidence that their boss is genuine and authentic in looking out for their well being. Effective leadership transparency balances business and knowledge sharing by providing people enough information (that is - what is perceived as sensitive information) to comfort concerns.
Here are some pointers to help you practice the right level of transparency with your employees:
1. Align common goals
Nothing is clearer than identifying and maintaining shared responsibility and accountability in work tasks. Be precise and focused with employees about what the objectives are and how you appreciate and need their help to be successful. When employees are constantly reminded of their value and contribution to results, performance climbs and job satisfaction increases.
2. Share what you know
There are right and wrong ways to reveal everything you know about what the business is doing and not doing. You have to balance confidential information with other decisions that are acceptable to let employees know about. Give your employers something useful - tidbits of information that they would not know from the rumor mill. Proactively reach out to employees with information, create a forum to discuss it, and listen and take feedback. Your employees will be grateful for your willingness to approach them at their level.
3. Do what you say and say what you mean
As a leader, you are viewed as the only link employees have to what's "really" going on. If you have to deliver bad news, deliver it, and talk about what the impact is on the team and the workload. Come with answers, not confusion. Don't avoid carrying out difficult tasks (like communicating cut-backs or other changes). Even if you can't deliver on something, you tried, and explained what you did and how you did it. Your employees will stand by you and appreciate your efforts.
4. Be Compassionate
Wading through all the corporate rhetoric, meetings, and "grapeving", employees want to know their leaders are human beings. It's not an easy to manage in tough times, but it's worse if your employees feel marginalized. They need to feel you are open to their frustration and concerns in a safe, non-threatening environment. Leave plenty of time every week for personal check-ins. Unlike a pure 1-1, a personal check-in focuses on the person, not work, to allow employees the freedom to share their intimate thoughts and feelings. Good managers always know where their people's heads are at. Employees welcome a manager that is not "all about business" every second of the work day. When you connect with employees at a personal level, employees will adapt faster to changing work conditions because their emotional base is validated.
Managers do have a tough job these days. The pressure to produce and compete never goes away and employees more than ever need to know their boss is a trusted resource. Transparency helps leaders build credibility with their teams and creates a unified front to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.

Transparency (Paperback) $20.94 Milan Kundera on Marek Bienczyk`s Transparency: ?The subject of transparency has always interested me; in The Art of the Novel I discussed it as one of the key words in my personal lexicon. Marek Bienczyk is right to give it an entire book of its own: transparency remains one of the foundational concepts of today`s social imaginary, and its role never ceases to grow. These lovely pages, in which the essay brushes up against fiction, offer us more than an historical and philosophical study, but a truly existential, and thus novelistic, investigation of transparency. It`s a delight.? Drawing on all his resources as a novelist, cultural critic, and scholar, Marek Bienczyk peels away the layers of our contemporary obsession with ?transparency,? skipping across centuries and continents to piece together the genesis of our fears of deception and overexposure. |

Transparency (Market) $78.07 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In economics, a market is transparent if much is known by many about: What products, services or capital assets are available. What price. Where. There are two types of price transparency: 1) I know what price will be charged to me, and 2) I know what price will be charged to you. The two types of price transparency have different implications for differential pricing. This is a special case of the topic at transparency (humanities). A high degree of market transparency can result in disintermediation due to the buyers increased knowledge of supply pricing. Transparency is important since it is one of the theoretical conditions required for a free market to be efficient. Price transparency can, however, lead to higher prices, if it makes sellers reluctant to give steep discounts to certain buyers, or if it facilitates collusion. Transparency and Fragmentation $130 This is the first major treatment of the effects of increased transparency on financial markets: an important and highly controversial issue for both traders and regulators.
